Once you have settled on a Victorian theme for your dining room, you have a lot of things to take into consideration. While many other furniture styles allow you just to purchase a few main pieces of furniture that suit the look and be done with it, Victorian furniture is all about details and the fine points. So, it's time to start pre-shopping.
Chances are you have already decided on some of the main pieces of furniture in your living room or at least have a good idea of what you want. So we are going to skip over the sofa, chairs and coffee table and move into something that you may not have thought of - sofa tables.
Sofa tables are literally tables that can be set behind a sofa and have a few different purposes depending on where you are putting them.
Against the Wall
If you are putting sofa tables against a wall, as in between the sofa and the wall, chances are they just have a few purposes - to hold things and to possibly be a place to put a lamp that can light over your shoulder.
When it comes to choosing this type of sofa tables for your living room you really have only a few things to consider - what the top and sides look like. Since the two longest sides of the table are going to be covered by the wall and the sofa, you don't have to care what those spaces look like. The only thing you have to worry about in this respect is that if it is an ornate piece that it will not push out too much where you cannot put it up against the wall and sofa as you would like.
Instead your focus should be on the tabletop and sides. The tabletop you want to have in a material that is fitting this room. That could mean a wooden top, with carved or gold gilded accents or even perhaps a marble top that suits the theme. When it comes to those ends, try to see if you can find something that has a bit of an ornate or decorative touch - carved roses and similar accents are common.
Open Room
If you have an open room plan where the sofa tables are going to be right up against the sofas you have more to think about when it comes to making a purchase. Depending on how people walk into the room, the sofa tables may be the first thing they see and their first impression of this room. Make it count!
You should go all out looking for a beautiful and ornate piece that really speaks volumes about your Victorian decorating style. From carved cherubs to roses and other details that are fit for royalty, there are no limits to what you can select.
The only consideration you may want to make is to make sure that you can still use it the way you want and that it will fit up snugly behind the sofa instead of being so ornate and flourishy that it doesn't quite fit.
